History

The band dates back at least until 1932, because in the late 1980’s one of the alto sax players remembers playing with the band way back then, when he was a young man. The City of Falls Church Recreation and Parks Department has sponsored the band since 1957. The band struggled through lean times in the mid-1980s with as few as nine regular members. By the mid-1990s, membership had increased to about 30 people.

In the 1980s, the band’s performances tended to be open-air summer concerts in front of the Falls Church Recreation Building plus other community events during the year, like Christmas, Fourth of July, and Memorial Day. The youngest member that anyone can recall was a 6th grade boy, a flute player. We currently have several junior high school and high school players. The oldest members prefer not to have their ages quoted, but leave it to say that we have several members with considerable concert band experience.

On June 20, 2009, the band performed a joint concert with the John Walter Cape Community Band in Cape May, New Jersey.

In 2006, the band traveled to the United Kingdom to play a number of concerts, including at venues in Bath and Bristol.
